““Girls Making Media” teaches teenage women digital media skills as they produce media segments about issues affecting women and girls in their community. The skills learned are used by program participants to educate, inform and influence public opinion about issues they have identified as affecting women and that call for action for social change.
THE 2009-2010 SEASON IS NOW OVER. APPLICATIONS FOR NEXT AUTUMN CLASSES WILL BE AVAILABLE AUGUST 1. SEE IMAGES FROM OUR ‘VOICES BLOOMING’ FINAL SHOWCASE, FUNDED BY THE EVERY VOICE IN ACTION FOUNDATION, AND LEARN ABOUT GIRLS MAKING MEDIA AT www.girlsmakingmedia.com
Teens research and produce one video and/or one audio segment per session around specific issues affecting girls and young women. Participants learn to: Record and edit audio and video Record voice-overs Explore the art of "on-air" speaking and telling a media story Edit and "render" audio/video into desired format for broadcast and webcast
Segment topics for the 2008-2009 season were: Employment Rights for Teens, Resisting Teen Pregnancy, Pay Equity- Highlighting the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Body Image, and Self-Empowerment “I Believe in Me”.
FUNDING FOR 2008-2009: This project was a collaboration between the WomanKraft Digital Arts Studio, and the Pima County/Tucson Women's Commission. CURRENT FUNDING: In April of 2009 “Girls Making Media” and WomanKraft Art Center were awarded a two year grant from the American Association of University Women to assist the continuation of “Girls Making Media” in the Tucson area. Another series of beginning media sessions of twelve hours each (three four-hour segments) will begin in October of 2009. Graduates of beginning “Girls Making Media” sessions (including graduates of the 2008-2009 season, as well as future graduates) can apply to continue their skills in upcoming “studio” sessions. “Studio” sessions enhance students’ skills as they create audio and video PSAs for community organizations and issues of importance, working individually, or in teams of two. All “Girls Making Media” classes are free. To see the most updated information about, and media created by GMM, go to our own website www.girlsmakingmedia.com
The grant from the American Association of University Women has generously paid for a good amount of the total cost of the program. The Digital Arts Studio is still looking for members of the community who might feel activated to support Girls Making Media.
SPONSOR A GIRL! SPONSOR A VIDEO! Do you have a business or organization that would like to sponsor a PSA created by Studio session participants? “This PSA was brought to you by…” at the beginning of one (or more) of the seven videos created is a great way to get the name of your business out into the web. Each video is uploaded to WomanKraft’s channel at www.youtube.com, as well as our group at www.facebook.com and page at www.myspace.com. Your business and website will be listed as keywords for the video you sponsor, in the web forever.
This is an incredibly affordable way that you can personally support a teen or teen young women as they learn skills that will help them achieve personal freedom while supporting the community. For details about how you can participate, contact Quynn Elizabeth at earthtribetv@yahoo.com or at 520-954-2004.

The Digital Arts Studio was created by Quynn Elizabeth, independent audio/video producer since 2002, and founder of www.earthtribetv.org, an internet media channel.
Quynn was a co-host of “A View from Slightly Off Center” and “Broad Perspectives Radio” on KXCI Community Radio 91.3fm www.kxci.org and she still produces segments for KXCI.
Quynn got her video editing start at Access Tucson www.accesstucson.org with a weekly half hour television show called “The Wanderer”, which still airs short segments.
“Quynn, you are an amazing mentor and the affection with which the girls listen to your advice and counsel is impressive. This has been a wonderful partnership between the Pima County/Tucson Women's Commission and WomanKraft, proving how important it is to combine skills, resources, and objectives to achieve positive social change.”
